What Is a Luopan?
The Luopan (罗盘) is a specialized Feng Shui compass used to determine the precise facing direction of a building. Unlike a regular compass, the Luopan contains multiple concentric rings of information for detailed analysis.
Parts of a Luopan
- Heaven Pool: The magnetic needle in the center (like a regular compass)
- Inner Rings: 24 mountain directions, each 15 degrees
- Middle Rings: 64 hexagrams from the I Ching
- Outer Rings: 28 lunar mansions, 384 subdivisions
- Cross-aligned thread: Used to align with the building's facing direction
How to Use a Luopan
- Stand at the front of the building facing outward
- Hold the Luopan level at waist height
- Align the cross threads with the building's edges
- Read the degree marking where the needle points
- Use the ring data to determine the Flying Stars for that direction
Luopan vs Regular Compass
| Feature | Regular Compass | Luopan |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | ~5-10 degrees | ~0.5 degrees |
| Information | Direction only | Direction + 24 mountains + hexagrams |
| Use case | General navigation | Precise Feng Shui analysis |
| Price | $5-20 | $30-200+ |
For basic home Feng Shui, a regular compass is sufficient. But if you're doing Flying Star analysis or professional readings, the Luopan is essential.
