What Is a Luopan?

The Luopan (罗盘) is a specialized Feng Shui compass used to determine the precise facing direction of a building. Unlike a regular compass, the Luopan contains multiple concentric rings of information for detailed analysis.

Parts of a Luopan

  • Heaven Pool: The magnetic needle in the center (like a regular compass)
  • Inner Rings: 24 mountain directions, each 15 degrees
  • Middle Rings: 64 hexagrams from the I Ching
  • Outer Rings: 28 lunar mansions, 384 subdivisions
  • Cross-aligned thread: Used to align with the building's facing direction

How to Use a Luopan

  1. Stand at the front of the building facing outward
  2. Hold the Luopan level at waist height
  3. Align the cross threads with the building's edges
  4. Read the degree marking where the needle points
  5. Use the ring data to determine the Flying Stars for that direction
